Coffee origin and farm background
The Volcafe office in Papua New Guinea sources this coffee from various smallholder farmers in the Eastern Highlands Province. Coffee cherries are transported directly from very small family farms to the Lahamenegu processing mill, which is owned and operated by the local origin office. Coffee is selectively sourced from farmers within registered supply chains, encouraging close collaboration and long-term relationships to maintain consistent production. Supply is primarily fulfilled based on specific orders.
The cherry selection process, combined with raised African bed drying, ensures consistent product quality. Drying takes place slowly, typically up to four weeks. The dried cherries are then rested in conditioning bins to achieve the best possible cup profile. They are hulled into green beans only shortly before shipment.
The Volcafe office in Papua New Guinea (PNG Coffee Exports LTD) is the longest-operating coffee exporter in the country. The operation began in 1978. Each lot offers unique flavor characteristics and provides an opportunity to increase household income for participating farmers. Parchment coffee is purchased and stored at individual buying stations in accordance with certification standards. It is then transported to the Lahamenegu dry mill, which serves as the central processing facility for the Eastern Highlands Province.
The parchment coffee is dried to below 12% moisture, either by farmers or, if necessary, through mechanical drying at the Volcafe PNG mill. The green coffee beans are then screened and sorted to meet the grade specifications. To preserve quality, the coffee remains in the highlands, where humidity is lower. From there, it is transported approximately 200 miles (approx. 320 km) by road to the port city of Lae, ensuring timely shipment according to vessel schedules.
