Guatemala “Golden Flakes of Jumay”

This exceptional coffee from Guatemala’s New Oriente region combines an excellent cup profile with a meaningful and tangible impact on the local community. It grows on the slopes of the Jumay volcano in the Jalapa region, where rich soil, higher altitude, and a rainy climate create ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality arabica.
Origin and terroir
New Oriente is one of Guatemala’s youngest coffee-growing regions and also the country’s fourth official coffee-producing area. Although relatively young, this region offers remarkably interesting growing conditions. Coffee trees thrive on the fertile slopes of a volcanic landscape, producing beans with a distinctive character and consistent quality.
The area is dominated by smallholder farmers who often grow coffee alongside other crops. They then sell the harvested cherries or parchment, which is a typical model for small producers in the region. Thanks to cooperation with these small farmers, this coffee is not only delicious, but also transparent and sustainably built for the long term.
Producer selection
This coffee is the result of an exclusive collaboration with our sister company in Guatemala, Peter Schoenfeld. For this harvest, small farms from the areas of Jalapa, Mataquescuintla, and San Carlos Alzatate were selected. The selection is not random — what matters is not only origin, but above all the high cup quality and the ability to maintain a stable flavor profile year after year.
The result is a coffee that is not just a one-off interesting microlot, but a carefully built project focused on consistency, quality, and long-term relationships with producers.
Flavor and character
In the cup, its volcanic origin and careful producer selection are clearly reflected. It offers a clean and balanced character that will appeal to lovers of Guatemalan coffees with clear origin and an elegant profile. Thanks to stable processing and thoughtful farmer selection, it feels harmonious and reliable in the cup.
This is a coffee that offers both enjoyable everyday drinkability and enough depth for more demanding tasting sessions.
Purpose of the project
This lot also carries a strong social dimension. Part of the harvest proceeds supported the creation of three specific centers in the Oriente region, where Coffee Camps / Kindergartens operate. These programs provide children aged 4 to 13 with a safe and stimulating environment during harvest season, when their parents are working on coffee farms.
Thanks to this, children do not have to spend time in a risky working environment and instead have space for play, learning, and development. The program supports children’s rights through comprehensive education, physical activities, and school support that helps improve attendance and school retention.
Support with real impact
Each center welcomed approximately 15 to 30 children, turning support directly into concrete help for coffee-growing families. Thanks to the cooperation between producers, parents, and educators, safe spaces are created during harvest season that are truly essential for local communities.
The project also helps children gain academic and socio-emotional skills that may help break the cycle of poverty and open better opportunities for the future. This Guatemalan coffee is therefore not just a specialty coffee, but also a story of responsible sourcing, education, and long-term regional support.
